PHP, a server-side language for programming, has been around since 1995. Developers today tend to have strong opinions about PHP. PHP’s status in the world of programming languages and tools is still a matter of debate. According to the Stack Overflow annual study, PHP ranks 8th among the most popular programming languages. It is indeed true. PHP powers many major platforms like WordPress and Facebook and is used by nearly 80% of websites. What is the answer?

Why is PHP still so beloved?

PHP (Hypertext Processor) is a scripting language for creating interactive and dynamic websites. They embedded it in HTML as one of the first server-side languages. It allowed web pages to be enhanced with functionality without having to access external files. This language has been in use for many years, with regular updates (version 8.0 was published in November 2020). These updates unlock new capabilities and add new features.

Despite not being the most widely used language, PHP still has vital benefits that can be helpful in web development.

You can create a website using just one PHP file. It doesn’t matter if you have no previous experience in web development. PHP is easier than other languages, thanks to its simple syntax and easy-to-understand commands.

It’s open-source and free. It’s easy to install, and you can use it quickly. Many PHP frameworks, such as Symfony or Laravel, offer open access. This feature is appealing to companies as it lowers the cost of web development.

It’s versatile: One of the significant benefits of PHP is that it is platform-independent, meaning it can be used on Mac OS, Windows, Linux and supports most web browsers. It is compatible with all primary web servers. It is easy to install on other platforms or systems with minimal effort.

Fast and secure: These two qualities are what every company needs for its website. PHP uses its memory, which makes it quick and efficient. PHP is fast and efficient, primarily when it uses newer versions. While there have been concerns over PHP security, it is still an acceptable programming language. PHP is extremely popular and has significant community support. Some of the many best practices and frameworks can be used to fix vulnerabilities and prevent cyberattacks.

It is easy to connect to databases: PHP makes it possible to connect to any database securely. This allows developers the freedom to choose a suitable database for their application.

Is PHP dead in 2021? Is PHP still relevant or worth the effort?

It is tested and proven. PHP code has been in use in real-world environments for more than a quarter-century. Because they have fixed the major bugs, developers can now trust the language. Over time, many frameworks and tools were developed. This makes PHP web development more secure, efficient, and effective.
